When I was little, my parents would say I “turned into a pumpkin” by 8pm every night, and even as an adult I prefer an early bedtime over a late one. When my nights are restful, I easily wake up early (6:30 or so) feeling refreshed, and the morning hours are my most productive time. Lately, though, my nights aren’t restful thanks to my sweet baby, so mornings have been rough.
I’ve never been a coffee drinker, but I recently got a French press and have been enjoying a much-needed energizing cup of coffee in the morning. I decided that this week I would move my coffee routine up to my bedroom, and start it a little earlier. I’m usually in bed until 7:30 or 8am, and by the time Sam wakes me up, the kids have already been up for a while (they are allowed out of their rooms at 7). It’s exhausting to wake up to a noisy house full of restless kids!
Last night I decided that instead of waiting for Sam to wake me up, I would set my alarm for 6:30 and have an intentional morning routine. I ended up snoozing my alarm, but still got up at 6:45 which is a huge improvement over 7:30!
The ritual of boiling water (with my electric kettle) and pouring coffee while I sat for a few minutes to read my Bible was such a peaceful and relaxing way to start my day. Instead of feeling like I was starting from behind and like I had to catch up to everyone else all morning, I was ready to go when everyone else’s day started. It’s not something I can manage every day right now, but I’m definitely going to do it as often as possible.
So do you have a morning ritual? I’d love to hear what motivates you to get out of bed!
